Why are most people obsessed with murder/serial killer documentaries and podcast?
I could just be portraying my personal obsession. However, I know many women that are very intrigued with these types of media. In my case specifically, I love listening to murder podcast likes “Morbid”, “Crime Junkie”, and “My Favorite Murder” to name a few. I listen to these podcasts religiously, and when I first started listening to them it was recent. So recent that I would binge listen to them and get through 200+ episodes in a month. It could be the banter between these podcasters that keeps me listening, but the information is just as interesting.
Yes, you read that right. I find these cases interesting and the difference but also similarities in these murders is intriguing. As someone who has anxiety you would think I wouldn’t want to know about murders because they’re still some that could be out there in the world. In a way, listening to these cases calm me, but also keep me informed about the crazies in this world.
This does not mean I am on edge all the time, thankfully that has not happened. This does mean that I am more aware of my surroundings. As well as being aware of who is around me in order to make sure I myself don’t get to have a discussion on these podcasts. This also does not mean that I am those crazy people who glorify serial killers, trust me they should all rot in hell for what they have done. It is though interesting to see how, if there is a reason, on why they did what they did.
Again, not glorifying nor condoning their actions; because there are plenty of people who have gone through trauma and not turned it around by being a serial killer.
With that being said, I know I am not the only one that shares this obsession. I just want to know why these cases are so captivating to us. Trust me if you have not listened to any of these podcasts some can get very graphic. Now though, I don’t even bat an eye when something graphic is explained.
What is it about this that keeps people listening? Why do we want to listen to horrific cases of psychotic people?
